On December 1, Long Island Rail Road customers learned that due to a technical issue with Mail & Ride tickets, the Unlimited MetroCard portion of the December Monthly Ticket will not work on New York City Transit.
To address the issue, the Rail Road told LIRR customers to purchase a new 30-day unlimited-ride MetroCard from a New York City Transit vending machine or station agent. Mail & Ride customers who receive an unlimited monthly MetroCard as part of their ticket would be issued a credit for $119 to their Mail & Ride account for the month of December to cover the cost of the new monthly MetroCard plus any additional MetroCards and surcharges they may have had to purchase.
The Long Island Rail Road Commuter Council feels this solution is unacceptable and yesterday wrote a letter to Mr. Patrick Nowakowski, President of MTA Long Island Rail Road. LIRR’s handling of the invalid monthly MetroCards places an undue burden on the on the riders, who must pay an additional $112 in NYC Transit fares for the month of December until the credit is issued.
