Life in the New York City Region is unified by the MTA system. This vast network of subway lines, commuter rail lines, and bus routes impacts almost every aspect of our lives. But even though we all use the system every day, there is so much we don’t know about it. And if we as transit professionals have questions, we are guessing that you do too. We welcome you to come along on our journey as we explore all aspects of the MTA and discuss both the good and bad that our system has to offer.
Who are we? The Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee to the MTA (PCAC) is made up of three councils created in 1981 by New York State to advise the MTA, giving voice to the riders. The three councils are the New York City Transit Riders Council (NYCTRC), the Metro-North Railroad Commuter Council (MNRCC), and the Long Island Rail Road Commuter Council (LIRRCC). During its tenure, the PCAC has pushed for implementation of MetroCard, was instrumental to the introduction of MTA’s City Ticket program, and successfully proposed public participation at MTA Board meetings among other things. You can find out more at our website: pcac.org.
Driven by our passion for story-telling, charts, and bullet-points, we want to share and discuss the trials, tribulations, and joys of our vast transit network. Join us as we embark on an exploratory journey of the MTA, and feel free to chime in if there are topics you want to discuss.
