Grand Influences: Architectural Station Tour at Pelham

TOURS OF HISTORIC PELHAM TRAIN STATION OFFERED DURING

PELHAM STREET FAIR JUNE 23

Station’s architectural and railroad history are the focus of two talks sponsored by

Metro-North Railroad Commuter Council

PELHAM, NY –Visitors to the Village of Pelham Street and Music Fair on Sunday, June 23 have a rare chance to take a guided tour around the Pelham Train Station, learn about its history, its architecture, and the trains that have passed by it for 120 years.  Tours by historian Mario Caruso will take place at 1 PM and 2 PM beginning at the Metro-North Railroad Commuter Council (MNRCC) booth located on 5th Avenue near the station.  The tours are free.

Built in 1893 by the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad, Pelham Station is the oldest of any along the current Metro-North Railroad lines.  As with all New Haven Line stations in Westchester County, the station became a Penn Central station upon acquisition by the railroad in 1969, in 1983 it  became part of the MTA’s Metro-North Railroad New Haven line.

In addition to the tours, MNRCC will offer family-friendly activities for children from 11 AM to 5 PM, along with a drawing to win a day at Grand Central Terminal that includes round-trip tickets on Metro-North, lunch at world-famous Junior’s Restaurant, free Grand Central audio tours, a one-year membership to the New York Transit Museum, Centennial commemorative merchandise, and much more.

MNRCC’s participation in the Pelham Street and Music Fair is part of the Grand Central Terminal Centennial celebration that commemorates the 1913 opening of the iconic New York City station.  In addition to Pelham Train Station, Metro-North and MNRCC will offer historic tours of the Yonkers and Brewster stations in September.  For more information, visit www.mnrcc.com or www.grandcentralterminal.com/centennial
