Statement by Orrin Getz, MNRCC, Regarding WHO Service at Penn Station During the Summer of Hell
At the MNR/LIRR Committee Meeting, Board Room, MTA Headquarters,
2 Broadway, New York
Monday, June 19, 2017
Good Morning, My name is Orrin Getz; I am here to speak about the summer of Hell at Penn Station.
Pascack Valley line customers have reasonable transportation alternatives to using Penn Station during the July and August crisis.
They can:
• Stay on the train into Hoboken–Connect to PATH to 33rd St
or connect to NY Waterways ferries to the World Financial Center or midtown.
• Take the Tappan Zee Express to Tarrytown to connect with Metro-North’s Hudson line to Grand Central Terminal or take the Haverstraw-Ossining ferry to connect to the Hudson line to Grand Central Terminal
• Take a Coach USA bus to Port Authority Bus Terminal.
Port Jervis customers have similar options to avoid using Penn Station during the July and August crisis.
They can:
• Stay on the train into Hoboken Terminal and connect to PATH to 33rd St or connect to NY Waterways to the World Financial Center or midtown.
• Take the Newburg-Beacon ferry to Metro-North’s Hudson line to Grand Central Terminal.
• Take a Coach USA bus to Port Authority Bus Terminal.
New Jersey Transit will be cross-honoring tickets during the July and August period.
New Jersey Transit is also discounting tickets for customers who travel on the Morris and Essex line because all of those trains will be diverted from Penn Station to Hoboken Terminal. This will provide enough room for the other lines to operate into Penn Station. The MTA will not be offering any discounts even though LIRR service will be reduced by 20% in and out of Penn Station. It shows that the MTA does not care.
The MTA is only allowing the cross-honoring LIRR tickets at select NYC Transit subway stations and only during the AM rush period. This is a BIG MISTAKE as tickets should be cross honored at all times and at all transfer points during the July and August period of disruption…
I would strongly suggest that you, Chairman Pally and the top LIRR management read the LIRR‘s June 17, 2017 edition of News and Notes ,”Summer of Hell” to fully understand the impact that the Amtrak work will have on tens of thoughsands of LIRR commuters.
