NYC Transit Riders Council Statement
Thanking Darryl Irick
May 22, 2019
Good morning, my name is Lisa Daglian and I am the Executive Director of the Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee to the MTA, PCAC.
At Monday’s Transit and Bus Committee meeting, we noted that we would have more to say about Darryl, and here it is.
Darryl, you have led with knowledge, integrity, honesty, humor, enthusiasm and patience – especially in the face of adversity. You taught so much to so many of us along the way.
Legend has it, years ago you came to a Transit Riders Council meeting and talked of your vision to operate buses as a business by implementing data-based decision making, and your goal of leveraging the opportunities afforded by new and emerging technologies. You realized that vision to the benefit of millions of riders. On behalf of those riders, we thank you.
Under your leadership, the Bus Mean Distance Between Failures improved by 36%! On New York City streets! Real time bus information was installed in all five boroughs, eight select bus service routes were created, and bus redesign efforts are well underway. Perhaps most remarkably, you and your team devised and implemented a bus bridge that allowed people to travel between Brooklyn and Manhattan within 24 hours after Sandy took out power to subway service. I wasn’t at PCAC then, but the bus bridge was the talk of the transportation town, and has become a national model.
Darryl, we will miss you, and thank you on behalf of all riders for your commitment to improving the system, and for the quality of the team you are leaving behind. We wish you all the best.
