PCAC Statement – March 26, 2008 – Service Improvements

Presented to MTA Board 3-26-08
William Henderson – PCAC Executive Director

It’s good to hear in the Chairman’s statement that the MTA is anxious to implement the proposed service improvements and that the Board is committed to maintaining existing levels of service. I’m here this morning to comment on the action, or rather inaction, of the MTA Finance Committee in failing to recommend the initiation of the service improvements at NYC Transit, the Long Island Rail Road, and Metro-North Railroad. The PCAC is very disappointed that these service enhancements have been delayed yet again. This is particularly troubling given the public perception of a linkage between fare increases and service enhancements. Here we are at the end of March; all fare and toll increases have taken effect, but additional service is still in limbo. We recognize the economic uncertainty around us, but please remember all those riders who said they were willing to stomach a fare increase if service were improved. We urge you to end their wait and implement the proposed service improvements as soon as possible.
